Home to Union Grove Campground at Stillhouse Hollow Lake
Actual time: 3:38
Stops: 8-minute pee stop at rest area south of Hillsboro; 5-10 minute fill-up at Love's in Temple using our new RVers gas card for truck pumps
The day before leaving, Ed checked the RV tires and found one of them was very low. As in 80 pounds instead of 110 or so. He aired it up and it held the air overnight, so we held our breath and ventured to drive on it. That's the reason for the fairly early start (9:50)--we were assuming we'd have to stop on the way out of town for a tire repair.
The original plan was to leave on Tuesday and drive straight through to Matagorda, but Christmas changed all that. Edward couldn't possibly have fit the kid's bikes plus som eof the larger Christmas presents in his car, and then we had birthday presents for him, May and Elyanna to take, too.
So we spent the night at Union Grove Park at Stillhouse Hollow Lake. not a bad park at all--not as pretty as Cedar Ridge, but half of the driving distance. It's on the South Shore of the lake and with a north wind blowing, it was colder than snot. However, in the summer it would be almost unbearably hot. One of those places whre the air conditioners could both run all day and still not cool it enough. (Or so Ed says--I'm not so sure. We haven't tried the new air conditioner under really hot weather yet.)
As soon as we arrived we went over to get our Fort hood site passes renewed. The office was mostly empty, so we got through that so fast that we went back to camp to wait until Edward got off work. That gave Molly a nice, brisk half-hour walk along the lake shore.
Wow! Coots!!! the water was swimming with them! But mixed in with the coots were a few pairs of Canvasback. I spent a whole lot of time trying to get good pictures of them, and this is the result:
Canvasback in front, coot in back.
supper at Texas Roadhouse. And back to mammoth RV, and bed.
