We got an earlier start than we needed to but that was no matter. The campground we were headed to, Tri-state RV, had no fixed checkin time. And it was only an hour or so drive.
Google routed us on a US highway instead of taking I-81 to I-84. Supposedly there was a closure on I-84 eastbound. I spent a good bit of time trying to ascertain if the highway was really closed or just had a lane out, and it appeared that it was. The detour involved three small roads and a goodly confusion. Plus the I-81 route went through Hartford or some horrid place like that. So we took the google route.
It was a lovely route, but not especially motorhome-friendly. We went alongside
the Delaware River though a National Forest or some such. Lovely! It was
33 minutes on mostly 2-lane roads but worth the trouble. There were several cool things I would have
liked to stop at.
Tri-state RV park was a glorified parking lot beside the interstate, at the intersection of a creek and the Delaware River in Matamoras PA. But it was a nice parking lot. The highway noise was horrid but bearable. The river was full of geese with a few ducks and a pair of Bald Eagles circling overhead. Later in the day I saw a number of fisherman on the other side.
The scenic 3-state overlook site was a rather long walk away, probably an hour each way, so we chose not to go there. Instead we walked Molly along the riverbank and then down the road; we ended up taking a tiny little walkway underneath the Interstate Highway to get to Matamoras on the other side. We didn’t go any further—I’d read that the “dog park” cost money to get into and the playground was uninteresting.
So instead we just went back to the riverside. Later I went down there and just sat on the ground and watched the river flow by. Heard a Kingfisher, too, and watched cormorants. One was choking down an overlarge fish--amusing. Eventually one flew away and after a while, the other followed. Going north?
Note from the time:
I’m sitting outside in the sun at 4pm and only a little chilly when the wind
blows. BTW the little cherries or crabapples or whatever are all blooming out,
so nice. And violets everywhere.
After having to endure a second winter on this trip, I’m getting a second
spring now. Wow.
Back at the Bellefonte yesterday I heard
White-throated sparrows singing. I wonder if they flew up from my house?
REVIEW: Tri-State RV Park.
Summary: Very convenient parking lot by the Interstate
There were no amenities, but it was full hookup and the sites were level and hard gravel. The manager was very nice. There appeared to be a lot of overnighters, because it was empty when we arrived and much fuller at the end of the day. And pretty much empty again when we left at 10:30.
The traffic noise was pretty bad and there was no place to walk the dog except down the road (they had a “dog walking area” marked off there) or down to the river. If you’d wanted a longer walk, you could go under the Interstate on a little cut-through for pedestrians, but the other side was a residential neighborhood and we didn’t feel comfortable wandering around there.
