Magnus in New Mexico

 Monday, 18 Mar 2024

So we're off on our continuing adventure, this time to the Chiricahua Mountains. We went there a year ago about two weeks earlier in the season.  And here we go again.

Leaving home all bright and shiny

The first day's drive put us at the Texas RV Park of Big Spring. The drive turned out to be a whole lot longer than Ed hoped for--it was 4:50 on the plan, but the way we drove (slow, plus three stops) made for a super long drive.  About 5-1/2 hours.

K-9 Comfort Station, ha, ha

I don't remember much about the RV Park. It was pretty crowded but not horribly so; it had a lot of long-term spaces but quite a few overnight spots as well.  They had a "meditation" garden by the clubhouse; and a couple of itty bitty trails up to an overlook above the highway. I wouldn't take the trails in summer--too narrow and overgrown. Other than those there was no place to walk the dog. I tried to walk around the campground, but there were too many scary dogs left tied up or caged up outside. Plus a stray dog came over and tried to be friendly--I had to holler to get him to back off.

Away from the campground, there was only a busy street with no sidewalk or shoulder and litter thrown all over.  For that reason alone, I wouldn't stay there again. Too trashy. It's not the owner's fault--the campground itself was perfectly tidy--but that's just the way it goes. No dog park + litter = no place for a second visit.

We ate some very good food at Cowboy's steakhouse. Ed had rib-eye of course; I had salmon and sweet potato fries which were excellent, and some okra that was just so-so. The salad was small but very fresh, and unfortunately, drowned in shredded American cheese--ugh.  I'd definitely eat there again, even go out of my way to eat there again. But ask them to hold the cheese.
