Review: Fortune Favors the Dead

by Stephen Spotswood

It took exactly one-half of one chapter to get me hooked on this, and if I hadn't been in the middle of another book at the time, I'd have raced through it nonstop. It was that gripping.  Reminds me very much of Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe, and in fact, I strongly suspect he was influenced a good bit by that series. There was never a direct reference that I caught, but so often the look and feel was pure Rex Stout.

The main characters of Willowjean Parker and Lillian Pentecost were irresistible and I'm hoping a lot for more of the same.  And the mystery was spot on--maybe a few too many characters to keep straight although I have to admit I forgot about the "Cast of Characters" up front.  I should have reviewed that periodically instead of just speeding forward until I guessed who the character was.
