Magnus goes (with luck) to Oregon, Day 13

Saturday, September 12

Chilly morning--40 degrees at sunrise.  We packed up and headed northwest. On the way, we passed a cool sign--it said, 45th parallel. Half way between the equator and the north pole.

Notes on the road:

Heading northwest from Baker City, we are finding a lot of trees. Went over a mountain pass--about 3700 feet.

North central Oregon is very flat and only 1200 feet elevation. Weird.

Now it's down to 557 feet. Big prairie. Scattered trees all silvery gray. Or dusty gray depending on your state of mind.

Washington is a long 700' elevation valley of grapes and a few apples. Huge fields. Wow.

I might be seeing mountains to the west but that could be clouds. It's very hazy and gray.

Carrots, lots!

We got to Yakima Sportsman State Park at 2:00, a half hour early for check-in. But the guy at the gate was fine with that.

See the park review (below) for details. After hooking up utilities and taking a short walk, I took Molly for a jog. It was very frustrating because I kept seeing birds and by the time i got her to stay put and let me look, they were gone. I was highly aggravated but we managed a one hour jog. I got a little turned around coming back and had to backtrack. But not seriously.

Pretty pond and trail.

At five o'clock Ed and I went to Wal-Mart, Taco Bell and McDonald's.

After eating I realized it was after 7pm and sunset was at 7:18. Molly needed a bedtime walk and when possible, I like to do it before dark. I barely got out the door before realizing it was raining and a cold wind blowing--back inside to get the raincoat. It peppered down pretty good for our half-hour stroll, in gradually increasing darkness. So home we went. Good night!

Review Yakima Sportsman State Park

Clearly a beautiful park in its time

Old and a bit shabby but nice. Big old trees, lovely little pond. The trails would have been nice but they were awfully trashy. You can walk on the floodwall and see geese down in the river. But once again, there was a lot of trash everywhere.

We had site 15, pull-thru, full hookup, but the 50-amp was on a single pole; not the modern kind. (110 instead of 220). But it worked okay.

Our row of sites, called "utility" sites, were ridiculously close together. And the hookups were crammed closely together in a small space. Other sites were more spacious but I'm not sure what utilities they had.

Starlink worked fine, on the ground behind the coach.
