Review: The 10

The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road

By E A Hanks

What an odd memoir! Not exactly the story of a highway—Interstate 10—but the story of a journey along the highway in search of the author’s past. I picked this up at a State Park book exchange stand and though it sounded appropriate for the time and place (I was myself traveling on and near Interstate 10). And it first, despite the teasing of a personal story that I really wanted to hear, she took me on a fanciful journey around the origins of the western beginning of the highway. It seemed odd and pointless reading, but something made me persist….

And soon I was glad I did! She has some adventures, both inner and outer, and along with her facility for observation of the people, places, and moods around her, it turned out to be a wondrous adventure.

Loved it. Almost completely. And never hated it, even in the sad parts.
