Sunday August 17
Molly and I got our long walk, at last. And it hurt!
The family picked up Ed and took him to church with them. So Molly and I headed out, trying to find the trail that led to the dam and across West Thompson Lake. We ended up taking the Lakeshore Trail to the boat ramp, but even with the map I’d printed out, I couldn’t see where the trail picked up again after the ramp. We found “a” trail, but soon it became obvious that we were on the disc golf course. Luckily no one was playing—on the way to the dam. On the way back we tried again and failed again to find the trail, and our shortcut through the golf course required us to duck out of sight once to let some golfers pass on. Way off in the distance—I’m not sure they even saw me. And odds are they wouldn’t have minded, but I really hate to mess up a person’s game.
The walk across the grassy dam was very lovely, and if we’d kept on going at the end we’d have ended up at another park on the other side of the lake. But my toe was screaming agony and we headed back. But not before taking a detour out on an abandoned road that had been turned into a peninsula by the lake (I guess).
Lots of Osprey, a couple of Cormorant. Lovely place. We ended up with a total of about 1-1/2 hour of walking, which was a shame because I’d wanted to go longer and take all the little trails that crisscrossed through the woods. But I just didn’t feel up to it.
When Ed returned from church, we went back to Edward’s house, where the guys tried to fix the water heater. They ended up having to head to Lowes again; I went along for the ride and so did Elyanna. They got the parts that should work, this time, and also bought a stack of boards to fix Edward’s back deck. (It had a dozen or so rotten boards mixed in with perfectly good boards.
I believe this was the day they got the water heater fixed.
We
were going to eat at a Mexican restaurant that they liked, but it was closed
for Sunday. So we ended up going to our old standby, Mexicali. I remembered what I’d learned in the other
times we ate there—even though they have a large vegetarian section on the
menu, their notion of the correct vegetables for a Mexican dish is really off
base. Cauliflower, broccoli and carrots in a burrito? Horrid!
Previous I’d had their veggie
bowl and it was the same combination of veggies with almost no spices. This
time the veggies were still bland and there were so few of them it was
basically just bread with a thin cheese sauce on top. Another time, order fish!
