Mammoth Goes to The Falls. The Big Ones. Day 13

Sun 1 October

Today's adventure happened in the afternoon. Ed went to church and after dropping him off, I had breakfast and then took Molly for a 2-hour walk. Much mud was involved in the expedition. The trail we'd taken in the spring had disappeared but we found a side trail that looped back toward the road and eventually dropped us off in the "Wilderness" camping area.

But after all that, plus cleaning the motorhome, it was too late for me to drive 30 minutes there-and-back to Walmart to pick up groceries. So Ed and I went together, on our way back to Edward's. No iced tea to be had, plus I forgot to put fruit on my list. So other than a few bananas, I would be traveling with no fruit except a leftover half of an apple and a small bunch of grapes.

Then as we headed toward Edwards, we met a fire truck. We watched it and said, "please don't turn down Edward's street." Which it did. Then we followed it and said, "Please don't stop in front of Edward's house." Which it did.  There they stood, out in front of the house, which was, luckily! not spewing smoke out of any of the open windows.

It turned out the carbon monoxide detectors had gone off.  After the firemen cleared out the carbon monoxide and tested the house, they left but we still had to wait for a furnace repairman. Who came promptly, within 30 minutes or so, on a Sunday!  He spent a good while correcting the problem--a vent not ducting to the outside--and pointed out the deficiencies in the ductwork. But at least it was safe to turn on the furnace again.

It was too late to take the kids to a playground and most of the other restaurants were closed (Sunday), so we ate at Texas Roadhouse.  I was delighted to learn that the "fried catfish platter" they have back home was replaced with a "fish and chips platter."  The fish was fried cod or pollack or some such white fish and I subbed a sweet potato for the chips. Excellent eating.

And that was the end of our sojourn with family.
