Mammoth Goes to The Falls. The Big Ones. Day 8

Tuesday 26 September

Note from the time:
I don't want to write about today because I don't want to remember today. It had a nice ending, though--Adirondack Gateway Campground and Lodge. This is truly a lovely, lovely place.

It's a private RV park, so most of the spaces are side by side. But spaciously situated. The surface is grass and dirt, and at this time it's completely dry and wonderful.

The owner is very accommodating, friendly and helpful. She told me if I wanted a one-hour hike, to take the trail (they have a hand-drawn trail map and a lot of well-marked, interconnected trails back into the woods backing up into a state park) and keep turning left; I'd come out right back at the owner's house. And I did, nicely.  I hoped for bear but didn't see any.

As to the rest of the day, let's just say that Ed and Border Patrol agents don't make good bedfellows. After waiting 45 minutes or so in the the long line of buses to approach the checkpoint--the RV lane was closed so we were forced into the bus lane--we were asked to open the door and let the agent look around. Ed told him that we did not allow the search, and so the agent went back out and made us wait another ten minutes or so. Then he and another officer came back and insisted on searching.

Totally unnecessary. Totally, totally unnecessary. If Ed hadn't got all "14th amendment" on them, they'd have probably not done a search at all.   I did a quick online check and according to most legal decisions, it was within their rights.  And if we would have just shut up and let them do their job, we'd have been through in an hour instead of the hour-ten-minutes that we waited.

Stupid all around.

And then the drive sucked, the traffic sucked, the google route to get through the town on the US side was going under a low clearance and I had to reroute us on a roundabout "truck route" to avoid it. The gas stops were atrocious, and even though we left by ten, we didn't arrive until after four.  For a 3:45 drive, we took over six hours.

 Hudson River, I think

The only other good thing was breakfast. We went back to stacked pancake because Ed wanted to try the Cinnabon Pancake. Excellent!  My veggie omelet was pretty good too, and the homemade strawberry preserves quite yummy.
